Youth Officer

Captain Steven Thomas

As someone who has experienced firsthand the transformative power of youth ministry, I am excited to join the Territorial Youth Department where I can help shape the spiritual journey of so many young people.

My own calling to ministry happened while working at Camp Connri, and I carry that same spirit of openness to God’s leading into this new role. I am passionate about making the Gospel accessible and engaging for today’s youth, understanding that each young person’s journey with Christ is unique.I have a deep appreciation for mental health education and the importance of creating safe, accepting spaces where youth can explore their faith authentically.

When I’m not creating ministry resources with my art or dreaming up new ways to connect kids with Christ, you can find me spending time with my two dogs or diving deep into my love for comic books, art and writing.

I thank God for being for me who he was for Hagar, El Roi “the God who sees me”, and I’m excited to see how He will use my experiences and passions to impact young lives across the territory.

I love the Lord and I strive to walk in kindness; I enjoy encouraging and loving on people. Laughing, naps and chips and salsa are my favorite pastimes. If I’m not doing any of the previous, I’m probably hiking a trail somewhere or playing my guitar worshiping. If you want to experience firsthand what a nerd I am, ask me about woodworking or anything to do with (but not limited to) building or music. My friends call me MacGyver because I can fix anything. I’m passionate about Troops Ministry and I want to empower and support our territory with all that I can. I’m a believer in getting our youth outside to experience our creator in amazing new ways. Join me!

I describe myself as an introvert with “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out). That means that I thoroughly enjoy -and need- quiet time to be still and recharge on my own, but I love an opportunity to experience something new and make memories with others. My husband and our rescue dog fill my heart, I really enjoy quality time with the people I love, and I probably care too much about plants and good coffee. I follow Jesus, and I have worked in youth ministry for The Salvation Army for over 12 years in various corps and camps. God has challenged me through it but has never left my side. My favorite thing is seeing people succeed, so I’m excited to support leaders of all ages and levels of experience in my new position as Youth Discipleship Coordinator. I can help with all things Corps Cadets, Junior Soldiers, and Sunday school, and I want to help people feel empowered to use their gifts for the Kingdom!

Born and raised Puerto Rican, I am an introverted extrovert who loves to surround myself with beautiful-hearted people. I invest time in my hobbies such as embroidery, dance, working out, and collecting trinkets. I love to read—bookstores love to see me coming, as I almost always leave with at least two books (and that’s me practicing restraint!). I also cherish time spent with my little dachshund, Kermit, who has my whole heart.

I have worked for The Salvation Army in the past, primarily with youth in camps, and have been involved in various ministries. However, I’ve always desired to be part of a team like this and cannot wait to grow alongside others who will encourage me in my walk with God. I feel blessed to work toward His Kingdom and look forward to helping others experience His goodness deeply in their own lives.

Our Mission

East Youth has a unique mission: to strive to inspire a generation of youth within The Salvation Army’s eastern territory to live for what matters most. We also strive to be a resource for the Eastern territory at the local level, with resources for all youth programs at the corps and divisional levels.

We are passionate about making a lasting impact on the spiritual journey of our youth. It is our hope that a new generation of leaders will be trained and inspired to serve the kingdom.
